Favourite staff pt. 1
Nyeza's recent reference to her favourite male councilors of yesteryear got me thinking. Who were mine? Of course I would have to split this category up into gender, and would have to relate this question back to my days as a camper.
For the male staff (in no particular order):
1. Boro - Quite simply the nicest guy. Had him in B2, and he was funny, enthusiastic, and cool before I knew what cool was. He made me feel really special (not that way, and yes, I know that's a horrible cliche) at a very vulnerable time during my camp experience . Sure he had tobacco stained hands, but hey it was the 70's, who didn't. The closest any councilor I've seen has come to being like Bill Murray's character in Meatballs.
2. Luten/Phineaus/Sasquatch - I have to lump these three guys together. They were my first councilors when I was in B1, and if it wasn't for them, I would have gone home several days after arriving. I was one of the most nortorious home sick campers in Kawabi history, and man I would have hated having me as a camper then. But these guys tried so hard to comfort me, and they were so nice, I was able to last. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be writing this blog.
3. Ribii - Probably the coolest councilor I had. He was a dude. Most deserving person to drive the ski-boat; it was a good fit. The closest a councilor could come to rock star status. He had a gentle demeanor, and I barely remember him getting mad at us, this despite the fact that he was struck by lightning at camp. Plus, the son of a bitch dated Frye.
4. Guido - Another dude. Had him my last year as a camper. I was able to relate to him as a peer; he and I listened to the same music, and found out that we had been to the same concerts and CFNY roadshows. Had a phenomenal sense of humour. He sometimes allowed me to hang out in the staff tent to talk music, etc., which was exceptional. We became friends, and yet were able to defer to the camper/staff social divide without it being awkward. Always regret not being on staff together; that he died later that year still makes me unbelievably sad.
5. Kadoo - Once again...cool dude. Had a fantastic sense of wit and humour. He genuinely seemed to enjoy spending time with the group. Out of all the councilors I had, he seemed the best fit for the motley crew that had gelled together over the years (a supergroup that included me, Will, Mac, Murray, Ted Pimm, among others). One of the best camper memories I have is of a time when he brought the group all out to the ski dock to just sit under the stars on a warm summer night and chat away comfortably about all things under the sun for hours (side note: during this same evening he asked us what we thought would be one of the biggest trends/changes to come in the future. In one of my most prophetic moments I said it would be biotechnology). That experience typified Kadoo.
Next: female staff.
